This week brings us gamblers to the most chaotic, adrenaline-rushing, bracket-busting event in all sports, the NCAA March Madness tournament, where dreams are shattered faster than you can say "My bracket busted."
Upsets that make you upset
March for some is a time when people see Spring on the rise, and the colder weather slowly coming to an end, but for us sports enthusiast, this is where the nerd's become kings, and the jocks become couch potatoes, melted into their lazy boys as they only move to re-stock on their balance and beers. This year has been nothing short of exciting, as if you've been following at all, you'd notice that this year it has been quite an underdog story. With 19 out of 21 1-seeds having lost their respective conference tournament this year, you could say there have been more upsets than at your average toddler's birthday party. All jokes aside, this is one of the biggest events of the year, and it's one all sports analysts and enthusiast have had marked down on their calendars as soon as it ends, anticipating the event for the next year. We hope you're all as excited as we are to get into the action this week, and everyone in some sort of way becomes a winner as we begin the 2024 March Madness tournament!
Bracketology- The study of brackets
If you haven't heard, Bracketology is a term used in today's game to mathematically predict which teams should and will receive their respected seeding. In other words, a bunch of basketball Einsteins have created a formula based on strength of schedule, seasonal wins, losses, and other factors and have put them into a giant pot to cook us up a recipe like nonother. As of now, those1 seeds look to be Purdue, Houston, North Carolina, and Connecticut. Now, with all of these teams unable to win their conference playoffs except for one, who in the world really knows what's going to happen until the day the official results are released. As for this year's Cinderella teams, we've seen the two ever 16 seeds beat a 1 seed in the last few years, and I think we'd all be quite ecstatic to see the slipper fit once again coming into this year's tournament. Team's you've probably never heard of such as Stetson, Wagner, Howard, St Peters, Montana State, and Grambling will have a chance to make history, and put their selves on the map for us all to fall in love with, and ultimately bust our brackets.
Now -- for those of you who want to get down to the nitty-gritty, who do we think will prevail as this year's NCAA Champion? In all honesty, the old saying "defence wins championships" comes a long way this year, especially when you're playing against the top talent in the world. Iowa State, Baylor, Tennessee are some of the bests on both ends of the court to do it, and of course, we could see a 1 Seed like Connecticut who won it all last year shine, but it hasn't viewed as that type of year. #11 North Carolina, and #6 Wisconsin are very hot right now, and could be your average seed Cinderella, along with #14 Morehead State, and #13 Vermont causing mischief, but at the end of the day, the most consistent team in the nation has been the Houston Cougars. It doesn't take a genius to take a 1-seed to win it all, but we should certainly see them make it to the final game & realistically, if they do, win it all.
At the end of the day, we all want to see a high seeded, low populated school go on a miracle run, and remind us all why we love a good underdog story, and why we'll never have a perfect bracket. Pick your favourite team, the most erratic mascot, or the team with the prettiest cheerleader, because at the end of the day it doesn't matter what we do, we're all doomed, and we'll love every minute of it anyway!
